The Rank Organisation was created by J Arthur Rank in 1937 to consolidate all of his interests in the film industry. In 1938 it bought Odeon Cinemas, the largest chain of cinemas in the United Kingdom. Eventually it owned five major british film studios. In 1960 Rank Audio Visual was formed for administration of audio visual activities. The Rank Organisation ceased film production in 1980. In 1996 it was absorved by The Rank Group PLC.
