Founded in 1938 by two german immigrants, Max Ponder and John Best. Originally known as Ponder & Best Inc, the company was established in Los Angeles in 1936 as a distributor of photographic products. Over the years, it became a multinational manufacturing and marketing company with subsidiaries in Japan, West Germany, France, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland. The company became Vivitar in 1979, the brand name of its products.
